Welcome to guitar tuition online

News for week ending 17/06/2005

Ok people, I have been watching the hits on the site and I've realised that people are still looking at my lessons after 4 years without an update. From now on I will start updating the tutorials site and the whole of Genomia is in for a revamp!

Two updates in two weeks.. Pretty scary stuff. OK, I have finally managed to put together the first 'issue' of Guitarse. Hope you all like it. There's also the second part of my current studio log article with a new picture of us in the studio. I hope everyone is enjoying the fully expanded site and all of the new articles. I am still going to concentrate mainly on the guitar tuition and so next week will be adding a new theory lesson.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get around to updating the pages. I have been pretty busy recently and took a 3 week vacation in the States during April. Hopefully I have replied to all of you guitar guys out there who sent in their questions. Please keep them coming. It's great to get feedback on the site and it gives me some good ideas for upcoming articles.

I have added some new sections to the site here. The first of which will detail some general advice I have for other aspiring guitarists based on my own experience. The opening article entitled 'turning down' discusses how you can make friends with a lot of non-guitarists (such as recording engineers and PA guys) simply by being prepared to turn those Marshalls down once in a while.

My next new column is called Studio log and talks about my recording experience. Currently I am using a local studio for recording but I'm hoping to set up my own digital recording gear soon. This will also allow me to be able to accompany any musical examples with wav files.

The final new column is simply about the gear that I use both in the studio and playing live. I will try and explain my choices of gear and what I like about my current setup.

Anyway, I hope you are enjoying the site. Come back soon and keep sending me those emails...

Finally managed to get back in the studio and do some recording. JB Steeling is a tune written by my old Guitar Institute classmate Tim Jenkins. There should be plenty of guitar and sax on there for you all to enjoy. When I get the studio photos back I'll put up a complete article on it with a breakdown of who plays what and what gear we played through. Suffice to say that Tim did all the flash, fast stuff. Download the tune here.

Added a new article on muting techniques, a much overlooked area for many guitarists and hopefully paving the way for my upcoming article on left hand legato technique.

Currently working very hard at my sax playing. It's really interesting learning a second instrument from scratch and finding out all its idiosyncracies. Occassionally it can get frustrating (which is why I'm doing the website at the moment and not practicing) but for the most part it is extremely rewarding.

Still working on more Robben Ford style blues rhythm guitar and I will hopefully get some rhythm and chord lessons on the site in the very near future. If anyone can tell me which software would help me get some good chord box GIFs without me having to do it all manually I would be most grateful.

A friend of mine has started off what appears to be an extremely popular site which discusses guitar playing (amongst other things). He's even managed to put up a review of the recent Vai tour! Check out the site here.

Keep playing and I'll write more next week...

Finally got the site revamped. I'm sorry it has taken so long but I've been very busy. I appreciate the emails from everyone who enjoyed the site and I'll try and make more of an effort to keep it updated on a regular basis. I've started using a site management tool now and so it should be a lot easier to add new pages..

If anyone wishes to submit an article for the site or has ideas about the topics of future articles then please don't hesitate to drop me a line here at GTO.

Currently learning alto sax on the side but still keeping working on the guitar. I've been playing through some Robben Ford videos and I promise to review them very soon!

The Guitarse and Review sections will be added to the site when the content is there. I've got a new potential co-writer for Guitarse and I'm hoping it will help me get some ideas going. It's turned out to be the hardest part of the site to write.

Right, finally got round to revamping the site somewhat. I've moved the details of the site to an about page. I've also added a new technique lesson and even started writing some stuff for Guitarse! I'll be adding pages on reviews and links and I've got a new lesson coming up about right hand position (please keep these suggestions coming in!) Busy stuff! The big news though is that I managed to catch Steve Vai on two of his dates in the UK (London Astoria and Manchester Apollo). Yes, I even drove all the way up to Manchester (and had a tyre blowout on the M6) just to get a second look at the maestro in action. I've gotta say that he was amazing!! If anyone hasn't seen him playing live yet then I would definitely recommend that you immediately try and get tickets!

OK, got my other guitar refitted with EMG pickups. In fact I got the complete Dave Gilmour set including mid-boost and mid-cut circuitry. I've got to say that the sounds are amazing and really clear. I'll try and put a review up on the site sometime in the near future. Everyone who's played on the Clapton Strat has just raved about it so I'm likely to put a review up on that as well sometime soon.

Wow! Big week over here... Got a couple new albums by Carl Verheyen, 'Slingshot' and 'Slang Justice'. Great stuff with some amazing playing on. Spent a lot of time practising and working through all those solos and songs that I'd been meaning to practise for months. The big news, however is that I bought myself a new guitar! An Eric Clapton Stratocaster no less! I have to say that I love it and that it plays and sounds amazing. I have to thank all the great guys over at Chandler Guitars for being so cool and for setting up the guitar so well.

cheers, gto
